Depending on local conditions, the coastal defence measures include the creation of new beaches or the widening of existing ones, construction or reinforcement of breakwater embankments, restoration of the ancient sea defences (the "murazzi") and, where possible, restoration of the dune belt.

As well as its role in sea storm protection, this last measure is also aimed at restoring elements once typical of the environment and coastal landscape and a favourite habitat for characteristic animal and plant species.

To date, work has involved a total of almost 45 km of coastline and about 9,9 million cubic metres of sand. In addition, 8 km of dune have been reconstructed.
