| Introduction |
The first period of the Information Service's activities (1980s) could be defined as archival. Libraries were set up to gather together, sort and classify existing documents, together with a Geographical Information System (GIS), in other words, a database of the area occupied by the lagoon ecosystem presupposing production of digital maps representing the territory in vector format with georeferencing of both existing data and the results emerging from the studies. The second period (from the 1990s onwards) could be defined as multipurpose. To directly tackle the problems of the lagoon in the widest and most general way possible, as well as the GIS, mathematical models and other basic software and applications were also used. This was the beginning of the preparation of specific information systems, the Support Systems which store a certain amount of interpretation logic together with the data. In the beginning aimed at tackling problems such as morphological degradation and pollution, they later contributed to defining the ecosystem management development plan. The third period (recent years) has an operational dimension, directly at the service of the institutions, in which the activities form part of production processes. Both environmental and methodological themes are tackled, thus extending the field of research by diversifying the data processing applications, also drawing on the data and information organised in the Geographical Information System. The results of the activities are complementary to and in synergic relationship with those obtained by the Consorzio Venezia Nuova during the contextual development of the Plan of Studies and Experiments. |
